How We Rank HVAC Companies

Last updated: February 2026

US HVAC Spot lists over 140,000 HVAC companies across the United States. When you browse a category or search for contractors in your area, the order in which companies appear is determined by a set of objective, data-driven signals. No company can pay to appear higher in our organic listings.

This page explains exactly how our ranking works, what signals we use, and how we handle edge cases. We believe transparency is essential to earning your trust.

Ranking Signals

Our ranking algorithm considers multiple data points, weighted to prioritize the factors most useful to homeowners looking for a trustworthy HVAC contractor:

1. Google Rating (Primary Signal)

The company's average Google review rating is the strongest single factor in our ranking. Companies with higher ratings appear higher in results. We use the aggregate Google rating rather than creating our own proprietary score because it reflects the broadest set of real customer experiences.

2. Review Volume

The total number of reviews serves as a confidence signal. A 4.8-star rating from 200 reviews is more reliable than a 5.0-star rating from 3 reviews. Companies with more reviews receive a ranking boost proportional to their review count, with diminishing returns after a certain threshold.

3. Profile Completeness

Companies with more complete profiles rank higher within the same rating tier. A complete profile includes:

  • Verified business address and phone number

  • Business hours

  • Website URL

  • Business photos

  • Service descriptions

4. Location Relevance

When browsing by category or city, companies physically located in or near the specified area are prioritized. We use geocoded business addresses to calculate proximity. This ensures that results are locally relevant β€” a search for HVAC contractors in Dallas will prioritize companies based in the Dallas metropolitan area.

5. Photo Availability

Companies with verified photos of their work, team, or facilities receive a minor ranking boost over companies without photos. Photos help homeowners evaluate a company before making contact, so we incentivize their inclusion.

What Does NOT Affect Rankings

Equally important is what we do not consider:

  • Payments or advertising: No company can pay for a higher organic ranking. If we introduce advertising in the future, sponsored results will be clearly labeled and visually separated from organic listings.

  • Claim status: Whether a business has claimed their listing does not affect their ranking position. Unclaimed businesses are ranked by the same criteria as claimed ones.

  • Company size: We do not favor large companies over small businesses or vice versa. A sole proprietor with excellent reviews ranks the same as a large company with equivalent signals.

  • Listing age: How long a company has been in our directory does not influence ranking.

Category Assignment

Every company is assigned to one of six HVAC service categories based on their primary service type:

Category assignment is based on the business type information from their Google Business Profile, website description, and service keywords. Companies that offer multiple services are assigned to their primary category. If you believe your company is in the wrong category, contact us for a review.

Data Freshness

We aim to keep our data as current as possible:

  • Review ratings and counts are updated periodically from source platforms.

  • Business-submitted corrections are processed within 5-7 business days.

  • Closed businesses are removed from the directory during our regular data maintenance cycles.

  • Pages are regenerated using Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) to serve fresh data without sacrificing page load speed.

Low-Coverage Areas

Some cities have very few listed HVAC companies. For cities with fewer than 3 contractors in our database, we do not generate dedicated city pages to avoid presenting incomplete or misleading results. As we expand our data coverage, more city-level pages will become available. You can always use our search feature to find contractors near any location.

Feedback and Questions

We welcome feedback on our ranking methodology. If you are a business owner who believes your listing is incorrectly ranked, or a consumer who noticed a quality issue, please contact us. We review all feedback and continuously refine our approach. Read our Editorial Policy for more information about our data practices and editorial standards.

This ranking methodology page is reviewed and updated periodically to reflect changes in our data sources and algorithms. Our commitment: objective rankings based on verifiable data, never influenced by payments.
