Rhode Island HVAC codes & 2026 rebates
Licensing body: Rhode Island Contractor Licensing Board. Permits are typically required for full system replacements, new gas line work, or major duct modifications in Rhode Island.
Incentives: 2026 Inflation Reduction Act rebates and local utility programs can offset SEER2 heat pumps, insulation, and smart thermostat upgrades.

Frequently asked questions about heating services in Rhode Island
What heating system works best in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island's cold climate determines the right system. Very cold zones favor high-AFUE gas furnaces (95%+) or cold-climate heat pumps with auxiliary electric backup. Milder zones can rely on heat pumps alone for year-round efficiency.
How much does furnace replacement cost in Rhode Island?
A mid-efficiency gas furnace replacement in Rhode Island averages $4,500–$7,500 installed. High-efficiency 90%+ AFUE units run $6,500–$10,000. Heat pump systems are higher upfront but eligible for IRA tax credits that can offset $2,000 or more.
Do I need a permit to replace a furnace in Rhode Island?
Yes. Rhode Island requires a mechanical permit and gas line inspection for furnace replacements. Work must be performed by a licensed contractor. Unpermitted heating work can void equipment warranties and create insurance liability.
What AFUE rating should I look for?
In Rhode Island's cold climate, look for 80% AFUE minimum for gas furnaces; 90%+ AFUE for maximum efficiency. ENERGY STAR-certified units (96%+) qualify for federal tax credits and may qualify for utility rebates in Rhode Island.

Heating Services reviews in Rhode Island
What Rhode Island customers say about local heating services pros.
Since 2017, John and his crew has fixed 2 burst pipes, installed a new, very efficient boiler, and replaced a 275 gallon tank. The 3 emergency situations were handled the same day. I can not praise Fletcher Heating more. Extremely reliable, prompt, professional and very fair with pricing. I highly recommend Fletcher for your heating and plumbing needs. Thanks you, John and crew!
John and his team are 100% responsive around the clock! I would not recommend anyone else in the area!
uggg...leak in our oil tank!!! We contacted Tefft, our oil provider, and she called John at Fletcher, who was here within 20 minutes! He patched the leak, cleaned up what he could of the oil (we still had to thoroughly clean it with degreaser to remove the oil odors - that's a whole different job), and came back a week later to replace the tank. Definitely recommend!!
Very appreciative of how responsive you are to calls, making an appointment and always showing up, professional and affordable. Would recommend for any and all service you need in these areas. Makes our lives so much easier.
We are so grateful to Fletcher for repairing our heating system! We use a wood boiler to heat our house and have radiant floors. They were the only company in the area that were willing to help us, and they came out promptly to troubleshoot the problems we were encountering. They didn’t stop until the problems were resolved, sometimes coming out twice a day. I would definitely use their services again!
Fast service, upfront pricing, and friendly staff.
Heating Services performance guide for Rhode Island
Climate averages are state-level reference values, not city-specific measurements.
Climate impact in Rhode Island
Rhode Island sits in a Cold climate zone with average summer highs near 80°F and winter lows near18°F. Those swings load the evaporator coil, blower motor, refrigerant lines, and condensate drain. Keep a clean MERV filter to protect the compressor.
Extended heating cycles strain heat exchangers and blower motors. Inspect ignition systems and combustion safety annually.
Most common local breakdowns
Heat exchanger stress and ignition issues in gas furnaces during long winters.
Frozen coils caused by restricted airflow and dirty MERV filters.
Low airflow from dirty MERV filters or a weak blower motor causes ice. Ask for airflow and refrigerant superheat checks.
Equipment recommendation
A cold-climate heat pump or high-AFUE furnace with SEER2 15+ AC keeps both heating and cooling efficient across seasons. Seal ductwork and schedule coil cleaning to protect the heat exchanger, capacitor, and compressor.
Furnace + AC setups need annual heat exchanger inspection, verified combustion, and balanced blower airflow.
Local code and housing notes
Ask contractors about Rhode Island energy code compliance and permits. Older homes often benefit from ductless mini-splits to reduce line-set length and improve zone control.
Mechanical permit for system replacement and condenser swaps.
Post-install inspection covering refrigerant line pressure and condensate drain routing.
Load calculation proof to avoid short-cycling compressors.
Airflow verification (blower motor speed + static pressure).
Always confirm a contractor's license and insurance before hiring.
