Highland HVAC FAQ
AC diagnostic visits in Highland typically cost $150–$250 in 2026. Emergency after-hours calls average $400–$600. Request an itemized estimate before authorizing any repair work.
In Highland's mixed-humid climate, a minimum SEER2 15 is recommended. SEER2 17–20 systems run more efficiently in hot weather and may qualify for utility rebates — ask your contractor about current Arkansas incentive programs.
The 10-year rule: if your AC is over 10 years old and a single repair exceeds $1,500, replacement usually wins. R-410A refrigerant is being phased out — factor in sourcing costs when evaluating older units.
Verify through the Arkansas state licensing board's online lookup. All technicians handling refrigerant must hold EPA Section 608 certification. Ask to see both credentials before authorizing work.

The tech cane out about an hour after I called. He was very professional and helpful. He checked everything, tested it out and found the issue. I really appreciate the respective service and knowledge Definitely recommend and will use Richards again in the future if I need HAVC help
We had to take a leap of faith to replace a lemon heat pump that had been improperly installed by a disreputable HVAC contractor. This person not only installed a lemon for the previous owners of our home, but then attempted to gouge us with exorbitant labor costs for warrantied replacement parts after we purchased the home. We selected Richards Heating and Cooling to assess our issues and we haven’t looked back. It was THE best maintenance decision we’ve made since purchasing our home. Every associate I’ve interacted with has been knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. In addition to replacing the heat pump, we entrusted Richards H&A to replace all the old, filthy interior insulated ductwork with new, exterior insulated ductwork. Our home is now heated and cooled properly and the quality of the air we breathe has drastically improved. We signed up for the annual maintenance plan and the tech ensures the equipment is clean and ready for the upcoming season (thanks Tavner!). Moral of the story, folks: you get what you pay for. While Richards H&C may not be the cheapest in town, rest assured you are getting trustworthy people to take care of your HVAC needs.
I called at 8:54 am on a Friday morning. The tech showed up at 11:00 am! Talk about fast. They had the air up and running in less than 15mins! Excellent customer service and a quick response. Highly recommend…..Ty
Air Conditioning Services performance guide for Highland, Arkansas
Climate averages are state-level reference values, not city-specific measurements.
Climate impact in Highland, Arkansas
Highland, Arkansas sits in a Mixed-Humid climate zone with average summer highs near 85°F and winter lows near25°F. Those swings load the evaporator coil, blower motor, refrigerant lines, and condensate drain. Keep a clean MERV filter to protect the compressor.
Seasonal swings stress refrigerant lines and condenser capacity. Verify charge and airflow to protect the evaporator coil.
Most common local breakdowns
Evaporator coil icing from low airflow and clogged filters.
Capacitor failures on the condenser during peak cooling loads.
Low airflow from dirty MERV filters or a weak blower motor causes ice. Ask for airflow and refrigerant superheat checks.
Equipment recommendation
Balanced systems with SEER2 15+ and solid filtration protect the blower motor, coils, and compressor year-round. Seal ductwork and schedule coil cleaning to protect the heat exchanger, capacitor, and compressor.
Heat pumps favor variable-speed compressors and tight refrigerant line sets to stabilize humidity control.
Local code and housing notes
Ask contractors about Arkansas energy code compliance and permits. Older homes often benefit from ductless mini-splits to reduce line-set length and improve zone control.
Mechanical permit for system replacement and condenser swaps.
Post-install inspection covering refrigerant line pressure and condensate drain routing.
Load calculation proof to avoid short-cycling compressors.
Airflow verification (blower motor speed + static pressure).
Always confirm a contractor's license and insurance before hiring.
