Why Breckenridge's frigid weather breaks HVAC systems

In Breckenridge, summer highs average 74°F. That strains compressors, refrigerant lines, and condensate drains. Common local issue: heat exchanger wear due to long duty cycles. Recommended: systems rated SEER2 16+ for this climate.

Consumer Beware! Temperatures dived under 25 below 0 last week my boiler system stop delivering heat on main floor. I immedietly checked all my radiators and pipes everything was good but no heat or water was comming through. I started calling around for available plumbers to assist me and the next day I contacted town and country. Obviously, the house dropped down to freezing due to no heat. I had to buy kerosene heaters and run heaters. Town and country came over they removed covers off my radiators and water pump. Took things apart, walked around the house and advised me that pipes had froze and it was too cold to thaw them out. Their had been no heat going through them in 2 days with sub below 0 temperatures. They said they would come back in 2 days and try to unthaw the pipes. Leaving me with no working boiler in 20 below temperatures and my system taken apart. Due to frigid cold and no downstairs heat for several days the pipes and radiators upstsirs started backing up and blowing valves so I had no choice but to shut the whole boiler system down. When I called town and country to confirm that they were comming back to work on my boiler system and clean up there mess, at first they acted like he didnt know what was going on and then advised me they'd be right over in a few moments. I waited around for a couple of hours then called Town and country back and they advised me that they needed to be paid in full for the work they have not yet done and started B. S. ing me and making excuses. I told them if they were not confidant in there work if he could install a chmney for my woodstove so I could heat my house. They claimed they did this kind of work and I offered to pay them in full if they could atleast install my chimney They guy kept dancing around the issue and making excuses and tried customer shaming me. When he felt frustrated that he couldnt lie his way out of everything He backed out of comming over and not even atleast puting things back together that they took apart. Im contemplating filing a complaint with the better buisness bureau and suing them for damages.

Can't say enough good things about our experience with this company. Bob and Sam showed up within 10 minutes of me calling. It was an after hours call and they went out of their way to make sure I had heat. We initially thought it was something minors that would take a couple minutes and they ended up finding the problem and fixing it. Highly recommend Town and County! Thanks again Bob for your help, explaining everything and getting the job done !

HVAC Installation & Service performance guide for Breckenridge, Minnesota

Very Cold zone
Summer avg 74°F
Winter avg 5°F

Climate averages are state-level reference values, not city-specific measurements.

Climate impact in Breckenridge, Minnesota

Breckenridge, Minnesota sits in a Very Cold climate zone with average summer highs near 74°F and winter lows near5°F. Those swings load the evaporator coil, blower motor, refrigerant lines, and condensate drain. Keep a clean MERV filter to protect the compressor.

Extended heating cycles strain heat exchangers and blower motors. Inspect ignition systems and combustion safety annually.

Most common local breakdowns

  • Cracked heat exchangers from high duty cycles and delayed service.

  • Frozen condensate lines and iced outdoor coils during subfreezing weeks.

Low airflow from dirty MERV filters or a weak blower motor causes ice. Ask for airflow and refrigerant superheat checks.

Equipment recommendation

Cold-climate heat pumps with auxiliary heat or a 90+ AFUE furnace backup reduce stress on the heat exchanger during deep-freeze cycles. Seal ductwork and schedule coil cleaning to protect the heat exchanger, capacitor, and compressor.

Furnace + AC setups need annual heat exchanger inspection, verified combustion, and balanced blower airflow.

Local code and housing notes

Ask contractors about Minnesota energy code compliance and permits. Older homes often benefit from ductless mini-splits to reduce line-set length and improve zone control.

  • Mechanical permit for system replacement and condenser swaps.

  • Post-install inspection covering refrigerant line pressure and condensate drain routing.

  • Load calculation proof to avoid short-cycling compressors.

  • Airflow verification (blower motor speed + static pressure).

Always confirm a contractor's license and insurance before hiring.
